Dispatches from Iraq

Note from the blogger:

The primary purpose of maintaining this blog is to give people back home a clearer picture of what life is like, when deployed to Iraq.  I saw a need for this, largely because the media never covers units that are "forward deployed" which, in our case, means that we live in a patrol base, rather than in some gigantic Logistical Support Area or Forward Operating Base.  Back in the states, one will often see or read stories about USO shows and celebrities visiting soldiers, but those events and visits are always for the "rear echelon" - the folks who live a normal life and do very little fighting.  My unit is an infantry company.  We fight, bleed, and sometimes die.  Celebrities do not visit us, the USO does not operate where we operate, the media does not come around without heavy security.  Most media who do take the chance to visit us are often motivated by hopes of capturing footage or information that can be twisted around into a juicy tabloid story about war crimes, to make a name for himself or herself.  Our story does not get told, except in history books, years after the fact.

So, if this blog still leaves you curious about how we live, what we are thinking, our impression of the situation on the ground or anything else, then feel free to send me an email and ask.  That is what I am here for.

Please keep in mind that I may not be able to respond in a timely manner, but I will respond when I get the chance.  If I get a decent amount of mail, then I may begin a "mail call" feature, where I post and respond to emails.  If you do not want your email posted, then please write "do not publish" at the beginning or end of your email.  If any private names or references are used that I deem to be of a personal nature, then I will assume that the email is not intended for publishing on this website.  Do not send attachments.

I will not answer questions about, nor confirm or deny assumptions about:

- My identity or location

- The identity of my unit or its location

- The identity or location of other units in the area

- Future missions

- Specific details that I think may put our mission or soldiers at risk, if known by the AIF (Anti-Iraqi Forces), to include what we know about the AIF, what we know that they know about us, how we get our information, how we know/think that they get their information, and so on.
